National adoption conference to be held in North Carolina

This year the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) has announced that it will hold its annual conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. This national event, which celebrates, promotes, and explores issues related to adoption, will be held at the Charlotte Convention Center on August 2-5, 2001.

Ties That Bind

The title of the conference is, "Creating Ties That Bind." Highlights of this event include the following:

  • An opening address entitled "A Family To Return To," by Shane Salter, director of foundation giving for the Freddie Mac Foundation. As a graduate of foster care and an adoptive parent, Mr. Salter brings with him a wealth of experience and compassion for children and their families.
  • A panel of young adult adoptees and graduates of foster care who share their personal experiences with attendees. In the past, their insights have helped others serve as a voice for children and shape system reform efforts.
  • More than 120 workshops and institutes on topics such as preparing parents for adoption, kinship care, supporting children, adoption support, coping with attachment-related issues, and much more.

Child and Teen Care

To encourage families to attend this conference, organizers have arranged a child care program and a teen program. These programs enable conferees to enjoy the conference secure in the knowledge that their children are nearby, having a good time themselves. Participation in these programs involves fees over and above conference registration.
